This elegant welded bronze ring fitting is unleathered. Leathererd mast travellers are also available.
Bronze mast travellers are used on lug-rigged boats such as Iain Oughtred's Caledonian Yawl. The traveller controls the yard while hoisting and lowering the main sail, or when reefed.
The traveller hooks through a loop on the yard (gaff) and slides up and down the mast as the mainsail is hoisted. The ring stays approximately horizontal under load and thus slides with little friction.
A mast traveller should not jam during hoisting and lowering of the sail. When tension is on the halyard the ring is held in a horizontal plane, or at least at right angles to the line of the halyard. The ring itself does not have to be too strong since it is the halyard that is taking most of the load when sailing.
The internal diameter of the ring should be approximately 20 percent larger than the mast diameter to allow for free movement.

Get your Lug Rig under control
Easiest way (no extra lines required) to hold your lug rig to the mast when hoisting & when reefed. Your yard (gaff) will want to swing away from the mast when it is anything lower than fully hoisted. Slip the ring over the mast & attach main halyard to the S-bend closest to the ring whilst your yard is hooked over the open end with a loop of line attached to the yard. Super easy to rig & gives you the control you need to keep the sail in the correct position in relation to the mast whatever is happening. A keen eye will spot these on traditional craft in the European scene. Great bit of gear.
